Davie County Schools Arts Education

Davie County Schools affirms the mission statement of the North Carolina Arts Education Comprehensive Plan:

Vision for Arts Education:

In today’s globally competitive world, innovative thinking and creativity are essential for all school children. High quality, standards-based instruction in the arts develops these skills and effectively engages, retains, and prepares future-ready students for graduation and success in an entrepreneurial economy. Dance, music, theatre arts, and visual arts, taught by licensed arts educators and integrated throughout the curriculum, are critical to North Carolina’s 21st century education.

Davie County Schools offers Art and Music classes to all elementary school children. In middle school students may also take Theater Arts classes and a broader selection of music classes. At the high school level students are able to take classes in all four art forms, including Beginning through Advanced Art, Theatre Arts, Choral Music and Instrumental Music, and Dance.

Developing well-rounded and focused learners is a primary goal of the Davie County Schools. We believe that Arts Education is vital to instructing the “whole child” and assisting each young person in evolving into knowledgeable and productive citizens. While our country is in pursuit of greater sophistication in science and mathematics we risk ignoring the student's capacity to think on many different levels, processing facts while remaining posed to ask the important questions, composing original ideas and creating new solutions to problems.

Pairing the thought processes used in an arts class with technology skills and mathematical and scientific thinking strategies is recognized as a uniquely successful means of generating students who are well prepared for the challenges that will be found in the careers of the future. By providing the opportunities to engage in actual innovation and creative experiences, arts classes build confidence in the learner to forge ahead and find new ways of expressing ideas, new methods of drawing conclusions, and a new view of their world.

The arts teach us to look at the world differently, understand other cultures more readily, and encourage us to search for new approaches to solving problems. All Arts Education courses are closely aligned with the new North Carolina Essential Standards that can be found at the Department of Public Instruction website listed below.
